If Philadelphiahas one thing, it’s personality. Philly is so rich with history and eachneighborhood has its own unique air – Fishtown is no exception. Located northof Old City, Fishtown was originally settled by fishermen who controlled thefishing rights to both sides of the Delaware and was supposedly named by CharlesDickens when he visited (probably not true). Following this, it was known as a workingclass Irish Catholic neighborhood.
Today, Fishtownhas become an increasingly popular with Philadelphia’s young adults. Fishtownis colorful – full of murals, up and coming restaurants, funky bars and happyhours, and swanky concert venues. But the Fishtown we see today is also aproduct of the gentrification that has swept through Philadelphia in the lastseveral decades.
Again, Fishtownis FUN, but it’s also full of history. I’ve been guilty of forgetting this, butI thought I’d write a little post about a wonderful day I had with some of mybest friends a couple months ago. Days like this just bring me simple joy.
Though my friendshad stopped by Suraya for some (incredible) pastries earlier, I joined them atReanimator Coffee in the early afternoon to get some work done and grab somecold brew. Its massive windows allow natural light to flood into the building, creating a beautifully hazy aura in the space. If you’re looking a spot withgreat coffee, plenty of seating, appropriately witchy vibes, and of course,Wi-Fi – Reanimator is it. It’s also got another location in Fishtown and WestPhiladelphia.
Next up was the Good Spoon Soupery, which is everything a soupery should be, with a soups (obviously), quirky wall décor, hearty breads and baked goods, and an outdoor garden complete with fairy lights and picnic tables. The butternut soup was creamy and sweet while the pão de queijo was perfectly chewy.
Because we arenothing if not punctual, we showed up at Nunu Bar for happy hour at around4:55. The deals here are incredible and the interior of the bar is floodedwith striking red light from dozens of lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Thereare intimate booths inside, but we opted to sit at the outdoor bar andproceeded to order nearly everything on the happy hour menu, including amultitude of skewers, fries, salad, and a cocktail. You know – balance.
And to top it off– Weckerly’s for ice cream sandwiches. Autumnal seasonal flavors! Cookies! Bestfriends! What more could I really ask for?
